What should I buy?

Pick the radio for the job you actually want it to do. A pocket tracker, a vehicle node, and a rooftop relay all live on the same mesh, but they should not be built the same way.

Buy a 915 MHz Meshtastic-supported device for the United States, favor newer SX126x or LR11xx radios, and choose nRF52-based boards when battery life or solar operation matters.

Pocket radio or tracker

Best for: first-time users, hikers, casual carry, loaner radios, and “I just want this to work.”

  • Look at: Seeed SenseCAP T1000-E, RAK WisMesh Pocket, RAK WisMesh Tag, LILYGO T-Echo.
  • Why: enclosed, portable, Bluetooth-friendly, and less fiddly than a bare board.
  • Tradeoff: small antennas and indoor pockets limit range. Clip it high on a pack when testing.

Best for: learning, desk testing, experimenting, or building a cheap second node.

  • Tradeoff: plan on a case, battery, better antenna, and more hands-on setup.

Best for: filling neighborhood gaps from a window, attic, mast, shop, or roofline.

  • Tradeoff: height, weatherproofing, feedline loss, and power are the real project.

What not to buy first

Do not buy a non-915 MHz radio for Montana unless you know exactly why you need it.

Do not start with an old SX127x board unless it is already in your parts bin.
